As part of a six-month secondment, I led the design team on a transformation project, overseeing the design system, managing daily UI output, mentoring senior designers, and signing off builds delivered by the development team.
Enhancement process
Within the transformation project, whenever developers had capacity for small additional tasks, we took the opportunity to improve existing UI components. I collaborated closely with producers, scrum masters, and developers to establish an efficient enhancement process.
Refining components
A major part of my role included managing the design system and enhancing UI components with WCAG compliance in mind.
I identified misalignment in the offers-panel component and assigned a senior designer to rework its layout. By aligning icons and text to the left and refining the padding, we improved visual clarity and consistency throughout.
Design system
I owned the documentation and ongoing maintenance of the design system throughout my secondment, ensuring it remained up-to-date, aligned with brand standards, and fully WCAG compliant.
To create stability within the design team, I carried out a full audit of our template designs and worked alongside a senior designer to integrate the latest components and variables. These efforts established a stronger, more consistent framework for the team and significantly improved onboarding for new members joining the transformation project.
Virgin Media - Joint venture integration
As the lead for design conceptualisation in the Virgin Media × O2 joint venture (VMO2), I collaborated closely with a senior designer to implement the new VMO2 style assets across all online platforms. I also guided her through the updated workflow and design standards, acting as a point of reference for the design system and ensuring alignment across both brands. Working closely with the brand team and senior stakeholders, I helped maintain design consistency and presented the final concepts to the wider design team, ensuring a smooth transition into unified processes.
